The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry welcomed the signing of a peace treaty between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia while expressing concern about the dire consequences of foreign interference near the common border.

In a statement released on Saturday morning, Esmaeil Baqaei said Iran is closely monitoring the processes going on in South Caucasus and is in contact with both Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan in this regard.

“Peace and stability in the Caucasus region would undoubtedly benefit all regional countries. The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the finalization of a peace treaty between the two countries and considers it as a major step in the materialization of sustainable peace in the region,” he said.

Baqaei, however, expressed Iran’s concern about the negative consequences of any foreign intervention of any shape, specifically in the vicinity of the common border, that could disrupt sustainable security and stability in the region.

The spokesman noted that Iran would take the “political, legal, and economic arrangements” to fulfill its rights and national interests.

Iran believes that creating connection routes and unblocking the transportation networks will serve the stability, security and economic development of the regional nations only when they are in the framework of the mutual interests and observe the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the regional countries without foreign interference, Baqaei said.

He also voiced Iran’s readiness for constructive cooperation with Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan based on mutual interests to safeguard the region’s peace, stability and economic development through bilateral and regional interaction, such as the 3+3 format.
