Amnesty International sharply condemned Israel’s declared “tactical pause” in Gaza, as a grossly inadequate measure amid ongoing genocide and deliberate humanitarian collapse in the besieged Palestinian enclave.
Amnesty International on Monday denounced Israel’s announced “tactical pause” in military operations in Gaza, labeling the move as “desperately insufficient” and accusing Tel Aviv of committing genocide against Palestinians.
“Israel’s announced ‘tactical pause’ in Gaza is desperately insufficient while it commits genocide against Palestinians, who are facing the catastrophic conditions Israel deliberately engineered,” the organization said in a statement posted on X.
The rights group said the humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains catastrophic and accused Israel of deliberately creating the conditions that have led to widespread suffering and mass displacement.
“Temporary, tactical pauses while providing small respites are nowhere near enough, given the unthinkable death & suffering Palestinians in Gaza have endured for 21 months,” the statement added.
Amnesty reiterated its demand for a total and immediate ceasefire, calling on Israel to end its genocidal policies and practices.
The group also urged the complete lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid and movement, and the restoration of the UN-led humanitarian system that existed prior to the Israeli assault.
“We must restore the pre-existing UN-led humanitarian aid system & dismantle the disastrous, cruel model of weaponized aid imposed by Israel,” it said.
Criticizing the role of world powers, Amnesty stated, “The international community has a moral & legal obligation to act decisively against the killing & starvation of Palestinians in Gaza.”
The organization called for Israel’s full adherence to international humanitarian law, including the reopening of all border crossings to ensure sustained access for aid convoys.
“Palestinians must have justice & dignity. No parent should endure the cries of their starving children. No child should die of hunger,” Amnesty said.
The statement warned that superficial pauses or rhetoric would not resolve the root atrocities being committed.
“The massive destruction of essential infrastructure, collective punishment, & genocidal acts to physically destroy Palestinians in Gaza are grave violations of international law…and cannot be addressed either by Israel’s hackneyed promises or states’ empty condemnations,” it concluded.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has continued its brutal military aggression on Gaza, ignoring international demands for a ceasefire. Nearly 60,000 Palestinians, the majority of them women and children, have been killed.
The Israeli assault has devastated Gaza’s infrastructure and triggered famine-like conditions.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former war minister Yoav Gallant for with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its ongoing brutal war on the enclave.
