Protests in Istanbul, Ankara after Turkey coal mine fire

Two protests took place in Istanbul and the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Wednesday demonstrating against Tuesday’s deadly coal mine blast in western Turkey’s Soma district which killed at least 238 workers.

A sit-in protest started in front of the Soma coal mining company’s building in Istanbul, while police dispersed protesters using tear gas in Ankara’s Middle East Technical University (ODTU).

The police stopped a group of protesters heading out from the university campus to the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry to demonstrate against the coal mine blast.

Yildiz said 363 out of the 787 workers at the privately owned mine have been accounted for, including those who died. Yildiz said 80 people were rescued with injuries – four of them in critical condition.
