Nine Coal Workers Trapped Underground in Turkey’s Zonguldak


At least nine miners have been trapped in a privately owned coal mine in Turkey’s western Black Sea coast city of Zonguldak on early Tuesday morning.

According to the Zonguldak Provincial Disaster and Emergency Director, the nine people trapped are reportedly 20 meters underground, but in a stable condition.

Rescue works are to finish in a couple of hours, Zonguldak Governor Ali Kaban told the Anadolu Agency.

The governor stated that the incident occurred at 03:00 a.m. local time, adding that the father of one of the trapped men reported the accident at a local police station after noon.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Turkey and the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprise are working to rescue the trapped men.

Ahmet Güngör, Zonguldak Provincial Disaster and Emergency Director, told the Anadolu Agency that the reason behind the accident in the mine is not yet known.
