Japanese protest against US base in Okinawa

People have begun a sit-down protest against US plans to move a Marine Corps base to the pristine islands of Japan’s Okinawa prefecture.

The Futenma base will be moved from a busy residential area in Ginowan to the less-populated region of Nago in the Henoko coastal region.

Protestors held signs saying “no” to the plans as the island group already had over 30,000 US troops, which have seen consistent protesting for over nine years.

Many locals in Okinawa complain about crime and noise connected to the base, and the conduct of troops on the islands.
