Iran playing constructive role in region: Syria FM

The Islamic Republic of Iran has a constructive and influential role in the Middle East region, says Syria’s foreign minister.

In a meeting with Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani in the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, Walid al-Muallem also expressed gratitude to Tehran for supporting Syria in its fight against terrorism.

Heading a political and parliamentary delegation, Larijani arrived in Damascus on Sunday.

Iran has always been a loyal friend of Syria and the visit to Damascus by the Iranian delegation is very important since numerous developments are unfolding in the region, said the top Syrian diplomat.

Al-Muallem further pointed to a recent meeting between Iran, Iraq and Syria in Tehran, saying the three-way talks have had positive effects at the regional level.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of an international conference on the World Against Extremism and Violence (WAVE) in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on December 9.

Larijani, for his part, stressed that Iran would continue to support the Syrian nation, government and the anti-Israeli resistance movement.

The Iranian parliament speaker further underlined the necessity of cooperation among regional countries to counter terrorism.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The ISIL terrorists, who control parts of Syria and Iraq, are engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control. More than 200,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict.
