Iranian Ambassador to Beirut Mohammad Fathali renewed Iran’s support for the Syrian government and nation, and said President Bashar Al-Assad is the only solution to the crisis in the Arab country.
“President Assad is the only option who can overcome the crisis created by the ISIL Takfiri terrorists,” the Beirut-based Arabic-language Al Joumhouria quoted Fathali as saying on Tuesday.
The Iranian ambassador reiterated that Iran has supported the political solution to the Syrian crisis since the outbreak of war in Syria in March 2011, and said, “This is while some countries have supported and financed the terrorists to create problems for Syria.”
Last week, President Assad said in an interview with Russian media that he would only quit power if the Syrian people wanted him to and not under pressure from the West.
“As for the president, he comes to power with the people’s assent through elections, and if he leaves, he leaves if the people demand it, not because of the judgment of the United States, the UN Security Council, the Geneva Conference or the Geneva Communique,” said Assad.
“If the people want him to stay the president stays. In the opposite case, he should swiftly step down.”
Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fuelled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 240,000 people, according to reports.
