Boy with Pellet Gun Dies after US Police Shoot Him

A 12-year-old boy who was shot by police after he brandished a pellet gun at a Cleveland recreation center, Ohio, died from his injuries, officials said.

The boy was identified as Tamir E. Rice, 12, of Cleveland by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner, Reuters reported.

“Rice was shot in the abdomen by a city officer at a playground on the city’s West side on Saturday,” said Timothy Kucharski, an attorney for the boy’s family.

Police said the officers were responding to a report of a person waving a gun around at a playground at the Cudell Recreation Center at around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and the boy was shot after he refused to put his hands up and reached in his waistband for what appeared to be a handgun.

The handgun turned out to be an “airsoft” replica toy gun.
