Boroujerdi: 25 countries participating in 2nd meeting of Friends of Syria

Chairman of National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Majlis Ala’eddin Boroujerdi said 25 countries are to participate in the 2nd Friends of Syria meeting.

Talking to reporters on Saturday, he noted that the meeting is to open in Tehran on Sunday, June 1.

He said Tehran is hosting the event in line with its overall efforts to help end clashes in Syria and establish peace and security in the country which serves as a frontline against the Zionist regime.

He said the number of participant countries has been doubled since holding of the first meeting, meaning many other countries have joined the peace process.

He said this also indicates that Iran’s current policy has won many advocates while the US and its allies which have been fanning the flames of crisis in Syria for the past three years are losing momentum.

Many countries now think that there is only a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Syria having discerned that the evil policy of encouraging terrorism which was initiated and backed by the US and its allies has now turned into a serious problem for the whole world, he added.

As a major victim of terrorism, Iran has always opposed the evil phenomenon anywhere and in any form, the MP noted.

He stressed that terrorism is currently a big menace in many countries especially in Europe and the US as many of their citizens have received terrorist trainings in Syria.

The parliamentarian reiterated that the US is against holding presidential elections in Syria though it is aware that the present election is different from the previous ones since it is free and all political parties have the chance to run in it.

The first conference of friends of Syria was held on March 12, 2014.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly expressed its opposition to any foreign intervention in Syrian internal affairs, stressing that dialog, national reconciliation and democratic elections are the keys to resolve the humanitarian crisis in the Arab country.
